Handel : Messiah 1741
Recorded in December 2023 and January 2024 just after the annual DBS performance at the Meyerson Hall in Dallas. The empty Meyerson Hall is a fabulous place to work from a recording point of view – completely flexible / adjustable acoustically, totally silent and atmospherically stable (which in Dallas is amazing). It was ideal, too, having a dry run in 2022 to ‘try on’ the ‘new’ arias – especially ‘But who may abide’ and ‘Rejoyce greatly’.
By January 2024 these earliest versions were old friends and have won over many listeners! The recording also gave a chance for a final ‘tweaking’ of four-part winds discovered in John Mathews’s score in Dublin. And then a boy treble from Dallas, to take the arioso parts marked ‘The Boy’ in Handel’s conducting score: a superb boy’s voice and a direct descendant of Handel’s half-brother, Gottfried.
